The Annual 1-70 Challenge

Saturday, October 6, the St. Louis team won the I-70 Challenge for the second year in a row, trouncing the Kansas City Metro Chapter team by 11 strokes.  Outstanding play by Jackie Dixon and Jenny Kile, whose net scores after handicap were 75 and 78 respectively, led the way to victory.  Ann Relling and Nancy Rodney, backed up by Carol Gleason, Patti Means, Patty Redington and Faye Siegel contributed to the victorious effort.

The tournament was played at the demanding Eagle Knoll Golf Course in Hartsburg, Missouri.  Eagle Knoll has been recognized several times by “Golf Digest” magazine as one of the best courses in the state.  It is also a beautiful course, especially this time of year when the fall colors are beginning to come out.  Perhaps distracted by the natural splendor, players found the 1st and 17th holes to be particularly trying as many players posted double-digit scores on these layouts that require precise and well executed shots to have a chance of staying in play.

The weather was a stark contrast to last year’s inaugural event, which will long be remembered for cold temperatures and the constant, unrelenting, soaking rain that followed players through the entire afternoon.  This year was summery, cloudy and breezy – a welcome change that improved moods, memories and scores.

Following the tournament, the winning team stopped on the commute home to have a celebratory dinner at Boulevard Bistro in Winghaven, where they shared many stories of the day.  It is believed that some of these stories were true.

This was an unforgettable event that you do not want to miss next year.  Make a note on your calendar for next October to join us as the St. Louis Chapter seeks to three-peat and the KC Metro Chapter struggles to restore its honor and obtain its revenge.
