Solheim Cup - Ireland

2011 Solheim Cup with EWGA

On Sept 18, 6 St. Louis chapter members boarded an Aer Lingus flight in Chicago, headed for Dublin Ireland to witness the 2011 Solheim Cup. Also on that plane were other EWGA members from other cities; Chicago, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids and the like. That is when the partying began. Upon landing in Dublin at 8am, the ladies were transported to their respective hotels to set up housing for the week of golf to come. After a welcome reception that evening which gathered all 180+ EWGA related travelers, we enjoyed a well-deserved night’s sleep, snoring included.

The next 3 days were filled with Irish golfing (which includes rolling fairways, pot bunkers, fast greens and plenty of wind) touring, drinking and laughing. On Thursday after a spectacular round at the famous K Club, we headed to Killeen Castle for the opening ceremonies, each one of us with her American flag. Friday, Saturday and Sunday proved to be extremely exciting with early morning arrivals at the Castle to watch the tee offs, tromping the gorgeous but very long course, plus time in the Ping Pavilion. On Sunday, 3 rain suspensions tried to interfere with the tournament but it was not to be. It came down to the wire with the Eur0pean women taking the cup from the US on the last hole, hard won and well fought.

We headed back to the States Monday Sept 24 exhausted and full of great memories. The next Cup will be in 2013, outside of Denver. We’ll be there; you should come too.
